Violence against women remains a significant developmental concern in coastal areas, reflecting the broader national landscape of Bangladesh. Across the region, issues such as dowry-related violence, rape, sexual harassment, child marriage, and cybercrimes persist, contributing to a complex and multifaceted problem that undermines the well-being and rights of women and girls. Reports indicate a concerning rise in violence against women, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to address this issue.

One of the most prevalent forms of violence against women in coastal areas, as in the rest of the country, is dowry-related violence. Women often face physical, emotional, and economic abuse stemming from dowry disputes, which can have severe and long-lasting consequences for their health, safety, and overall well-being. Additionally, cases of rape, sexual harassment, and child marriage further compound the challenges faced by women and girls in these communities, perpetuating cycles of harm and inequality.

The rising number of women seeking divorce is indicative of the widespread non-acceptance of violence and abuse within marriages. Various factors contribute to marital discord, including husbands’ dominating attitudes, extramarital affairs, drug addiction, and lack of empathy or respect towards their spouses. Women often cite violence, lack of commitment, infidelity, and unrealistic expectations as reasons for seeking divorce, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support for victims of domestic abuse.

In response to these challenges, CODEC has been actively engaged in addressing and raising awareness about domestic violence, early marriage, dowry practices, and divorce cases in coastal communities. Through coordinated efforts with Union Parishads, law enforcement agencies, and Upazila and District legal aid committees, CODEC provides crucial legal aid and support to economically disadvantaged households involved in disputes. By facilitating access to justice for vulnerable populations, CODEC aims to empower women and ensure that they have the resources and support needed to seek redress for grievances and protect their rights.

However, access to justice remains a significant challenge for many poor households in coastal areas. Limited financial resources, geographical barriers, and social stigmas often prevent women from seeking legal assistance and pursuing justice for acts of violence or abuse. To address these barriers, CODEC’s initiatives focus on providing affordable and accessible legal services, including legal counseling, mediation, and representation, to ensure that marginalized individuals have the support they need to navigate the legal system effectively.

Moreover, CODEC’s efforts extend beyond legal aid to encompass broader awareness-raising activities aimed at challenging harmful social norms and promoting gender equality and women’s rights. By engaging with local communities, religious leaders, and other stakeholders, CODEC works to foster a culture of respect, dignity, and equality, where violence against women is not tolerated and victims are empowered to seek justice and support.

In conclusion, violence against women remains a pervasive and deeply entrenched problem in coastal areas of Bangladesh, requiring sustained efforts and comprehensive interventions to address effectively. By providing legal aid, raising awareness, and advocating for policy changes, organizations like CODEC play a crucial role in promoting gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and combating violence in all its forms.

Let us go forward in this battle fortified by conviction that those who labour in the service of a great and good cause will never fail.
